We almost forgot we had smart plugs until we couldn't live without them
Some things in your home change your life with a bang. Others creep in. Our Thorn smart plugs fall into the latter category.
When we were busy renewing our switchgear, our installer said:
“Did you know that smart sockets also exist?”
We looked at each other. That sounded like an unnecessary luxury. After all, how often do you use an outlet other than just… plug it in and you're done?
Still, we decided to go for them. For the style, we thought. For the finish.
But what we didn't know then is that we would only appreciate its use later.
From beautiful to smart
The first surprise was how flush they fit into the wall. Glass finish, just like our Thorn switches and dimmers. No plastic edges, no raised edges. Everything flush with the wall. And everything perfectly coordinated.
But we only noticed the real difference a few weeks later.
- Forgot to turn off the coffee maker? No problem – you can do that with the app.
- Schedule your outdoor lighting? Set it once, then it's automatic.
- Want to completely power down the kids' corner after bedtime? Just tap the wall panel.
It felt like a small thing. But it brought peace. And security.
What makes a smart socket different from a normal one?
| Feature | Standard socket | Smart socket from Thorn |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Plastic, standard size | Glass finish, sleek design |
| Operation | Only physical | Physically and via app or schedule |
| Insight | No | Energy consumption and status visible |
| Safety | No remote control | Always switch off, even on the go |
| Compatibility | Plug only | Works with Tuya and other systems |
We didn't realize it until we missed it
After a weekend away we came home and wondered:
“Were the lights in the kitchen still on?”
In the past, that would have been stressful. Now you check the app and simply turn it off. Or on. Or set it to happen automatically every day.
We only realized it when we hadn't used it for a few days: this wasn't a gadget. This was a new kind of convenience. Invisible, yet indispensable.
Considering upgrading your electrical equipment? Don't forget the outlets.
